Defying Gravity

The perfect time to write on what it means to defy the universal law of gravity is right after a trip to the movies to see Wicked. Let me go ahead and stop writing on what I really want to say here and meet up with the people who have some sort of opinion on if that was a movie we should be going to see or not, this might not be the post for you. It was such a great way to end the day together as a family and I must say that the movie was excellent.

Wicked is far more complex than just describing it as being related to the Wizard of Oz classic that most people know and love. The story itself brings attention to the fact that labels can really define you for the rest of your life and until someone knows the full story – they really do not know the story at all. If it is not your style of movie, that is okay too! We just so happen to love a great musical and this one did not disappoint. The storyline itself was great but there was something more that stood out to me – living a life that is not afraid to defy gravity.

People live each and every single day of their life being known by someone else as what they heard. Their appearance might not be what society has called normal or perfection and so they are not considered the model for everyone else. The truth is that when we meet someone in our life, we are coming in on the middle of their story and their truth. Most of the time we do not fully understand why people are the way that they are or respond the way that they do. It is so important that we take time to get to know one another at the authentic level that everyone deserves to be known. In order to start living this way, it takes determination within you to push past the laws of gravity.

The real purpose in writing this blog is to remind those who may feel as though they do not fit that feeling that way is a good place to start defying gravity. Gravity is the thing which holds us down right now in this very moment. It is the invisible force that keeps our feet on the ground when we are walking from one place to the next. The gravitational pull of Earth is 9.8 meters per second squared. That really does not matter much it is just one of those fun facts that I memorized in a physics class one time and it has stayed with me so why not use it. The only time that understanding the measurement of gravity is important is when you are trying to defy it.

Defying gravity means that something has to overcome that force which is holding them down. For example, in order for an airplane to take off into the air and take you to your destination, it has to gain enough momentum to push past that which would otherwise hold it back. That is the message I want to make clear to you today.

You were not made to stay where you are and become accepting of the level that was designed to hold you back. The things that have challenged you and tried to keep you in one place your whole life is very much like the gravity that you were made to defy. It is time to make up in your mind that you can do anything that you put your mind to! The Bible encourages us that with Christ we can do all things (Philippians 4:13).

Those moments in your life that have felt like they were keeping you from going to the next level of living or the memories that you have that might be discouraging to you are not meant to keep you but are only there to give you an opportunity to defy them not be defined by them. When you defy something you go against the grain! I believe that we need more of that in this world today. We need to realize that going with the flow is not always the right thing to do even though it often times is the easiest. Defying gravity takes determination and force. It takes a made up mind. Being defined by gravity is deciding that you are okay with the way that things are in your life and you will remain where you are.

I want to live my life in a way that is forever defying gravity. I do not want to blend in with the acceptable or the accepted but I want to stand out. I want to live out my life in such a way that expectations from others does not keep me held down. I used to think that living this way was what we were supposed to do in order to keep the peace but I have learned that we are not made to keep peace but rather we were made to make it. We should want to use our voice and speak up when things are not right and speak out when things are! Life was not meant for us to be held in one place forever but it was meant for us to go to the next level each and every day and often times that means stepping out of the mold that someone else has you placed in.

You need to give yourself permission to defy the laws of those things that you have felt like were holding you back from going to the next level. You need to use the unique characteristics of who you were created to be to stand out and not blend in. There should not be anything in your life that you allow to define you other than God’s word. Living your best life is what you were created to do.

“Everyone deserves the chance to fly!” But you have to decide that today is your day!
